What is a steam separator

It is known that in a steam generator (steam boiler), in the process of boiling water, saturated water vapor is produced, which has significant inclusions of droplet moisture. Being involved in the flow of steam in the movement through pipelines, such droplet moisture subsequently falls out in large quantities in the form of concentrated condensate, disrupting the operation of the steam-gas equipment, reducing its efficiency, and leads to erosive wear of the steam-condensate tract. To remove water condensate from steam transport lines and working equipment, it is necessary to arrange rather complex moisture separation and drainage systems.

To isolate droplet moisture from saturated water vapor immediately at its exit from the steam generator (steam boiler), before it enters the steam transport line, and obtain a dried vapor-gas fraction, devices called steam separators are used. Thus, steam separators are designed to solve the following tasks:

  • separation of saturated water vapor into a dried vapor-gas fraction and concentrated liquid condensate;
  • drainage of dried water vapor into the transport steam-gas main;
  • collection of liquid condensate (water) and its discharge into the drainage pipeline.

Types of steam separators, their principle of operation and design

The most widely used are two types of steam separators:

  • fender type;
  • centrifugal (cyclonic) type.

Stripping steam separators are characterized by simplicity of design and its technical implementation. Their principle of operation is based on the fact that the flow of saturated steam is directed to the reflecting (bump) surface, as a result of which the vapor-gas fraction, as having less inertia, is reflected and goes into the transport main, and the water-droplet fraction, as having more kinetic energy, " "sticks" to the surface, settles on it, flows down from the collecting tank, and further into the drainage pipeline.

Variants of the design of baffle steam separators are:

  • a separator with a dry steam chamber (Fig. 1);
  • labyrinth (slot) separator (Fig. 2).

The bounce-type separator is significantly inferior in the quality of drying steam or gases to centrifugal steam separators.

The basis of the design of a centrifugal (screw, cyclone) type steam separator is a screw plate reflector twisted around a steam-conducting pipe, which, in turn, is connected to the inlet pipe to the steam-gas transport line. The helical plate reflector is placed in the cylindrical body of the separator, where it forms a helical descending passage channel. The lower part of the vertically oriented cylindrical body serves to collect condensate and drain it into the drainage pipeline.

Saturated steam from the steam generator enters the upper part of the separator through the inlet pipe. Further, passing from top to bottom along the helical channel, the steam flow swirls like a cyclone, and as a result of the action of centrifugal force, part of the droplet moisture is deposited on the surface of the housing walls, flowing down into the collector. In the lower part of the body, water vapor, in order to get into the steam pipe of the helical reflector, and then into the main steam pipe, is forced to rotate 180 degrees. As a result, the remainder of not yet separated drip condensate under the action of the same centrifugal force is directed directly into the collector, and from it into the drainage system. The (dried) water vapor purified from the dripping condensate enters the steam line through the steam pipe of the helical reflector.

Centrifugal steam separators are much more efficient than bounce-type devices, and allow separating up to 99.9% of drip condensate from saturated steam.

Purpose of steam separators

Steam separators are an indispensable component of all combined cycle plants that require purified (dried) steam to operate effectively. Such installations, first of all, include:

  • combined cycle power plants (turbines);
  • steam engines;
  • steam heating systems;
  • steam heaters (dryers), etc.

The recommended place for installing a steam separator is the exit from the steam generator (steam boiler), before water vapor enters the steam line. In addition to drying saturated steam, cyclone separators can be successfully used for drying compressed air at the outlet of compressor units, as well as industrial and combustible (fuel) gases.

Technical characteristics of steam separators for selection

There are not so many technical parameters for the selection of a steam separator. The main and defining ones are:

  • maximum working steam pressure;
  • maximum working pressure in the system;
  • maximum operating temperature;
  • flow cross-sections of the inlet and outlet steam pipelines, which, along with the working pressure, determine the performance (throughput) of the apparatus;
  • the material of the body and reflector, which determines their mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

Model range of steam separators from OPEKS Energosystems

Сепараторы пара и газа

While many other companies offer to the market fender-type steam separators, which are simpler in design and cheaper to manufacture, but less efficient in operation, OPEKS Energosystems manufactures only high-efficiency centrifugal dryers that provide the highest degree of water vapor dehumidification. For steam generators of different capacities with low parameters of saturated steam, we offer models of separators of our own production OPEKS SCS, of different throughput (with flow cross-sections from DN15 to DN350, larger diameter on request). For steam-gas systems with high parameters of saturated steam in terms of temperature and working pressure, we also supply Japanese separators from Yoshitake.
