What are flash steam separators and why are they intended?

Industrial heat exchangers, depending on the process, consume high pressure live steam, from 5 to 18 bar. Condensate removed from such industrial heat exchangers, which is at approximately the same pressure, has a saturation temperature of 130 ° C to 200 ° C. In fact, this is superheated water under high pressure, mixed with "passing steam" from the main working circuit, which often, for technological purposes, requires cooling to at least 100 degrees C. The enthalpy (excess heat energy that can or should be extracted) of superheated water condensate is from 550 to 820 kJ / kg, which is quite an economically significant value.

The surplus energy of the superheated water condensate can be recovered in the form of low pressure secondary steam (up to 3 bar). Such a low potential vapor is obtained by secondary boiling of superheated water condensate, which gets into conditions where the pressure in the system is close to atmospheric.

In industrial plants, such conditions are created in a special expansion vessel called the secondary boiling steam separator SPVV (another name is the OPVV vapor separator). In such a vessel, a pressure is maintained that is significantly lower than in a working circuit with live steam. What conditions are sufficient for the secondary boiling up of the superheated condensate. The resulting secondary low-potential steam is discharged into a separate circuit for its further use in other technological or economic purposes.

The amount of superheated liquid condensate, which is converted into secondary steam, depending on the initial temperature and pressure, can reach from 8 to 18 percent of the total mass. In this case, thermal energy in an amount of about 330 kJ can be separated with the secondary steam, in terms of 1 kg of superheated condensate.

Thus, a secondary boiling steam separator (SPVV / OPVV) is a heat engineering device for technological or energy-saving purposes, which makes it possible to obtain (utilize) secondary heat energy from the withdrawn superheated condensate of high-pressure steam-gas systems, in the form of low-potential water vapor (low pressure), for its useful use for technological or economic purposes.

Scope of application of the flash steam separator

The use of SPVV / OPVV allows:

  1. Receive low potential steam (low pressure) for use in technological or household (heating) purposes, and at the same time save energy resources (fuel or electricity), in the amount of heat recovered from the superheated condensate.
  2. Reduce unproductive condensate losses to evaporation.
  3. Improve the economic performance and environmental conditions at the enterprise.
    Possible spheres of application of FPVV / OPVV:
  • in steam blowdown systems of boilers, to increase the energy efficiency of the operating cycle
  • in heating and ventilation systems for large industrial or commercial facilities;
  • in hot water supply systems for industrial needs;
  • in steam cleaning systems (for example, soot blowing);
  • low potential steam for humidification in technological processes (papermaking, pelletizing, etc.).

The principle of operation of the flash steam separator

Structurally, SPVV / OPVV is a large-volume cylindrical expansion tank, with nozzles:

  • high pressure condensate supply;
  • low pressure condensate drainage;
  • secondary steam outlet.

In addition, the tank has holes for mounting a safety valve and a pressure sensor (manometer).

In the working position, the tank SPVV / OPVV is oriented vertically to optimize the removal of secondary steam. High-pressure superheated condensate coming from a steam trap or condensate pump enters through a corresponding branch pipe into the expansion vessel of the SSVV / OPVV, where a much lower operating pressure (up to 3 bar) is maintained with the help of a secondary steam outlet circuit and a safety valve. Under conditions of reduced pressure, the dew point temperature of the superheated condensate drops sharply, and it boils up again, releasing part of the excess energy with secondary steam. Subsequently, the cooled condensate residues flow down to the bottom of the tank and are discharged into the corresponding pipeline, the low-potential steam rises to the top of the tank and is discharged into the corresponding circuit. When the working pressure inside the FPVV / OPVV tank is exceeded, the excess steam is vented by the safety valve.

Technical characteristics, parameters for the selection of SPVV / OPVV

Due to the very similar and relatively simple operating conditions, flash steam separators are usually made of welded carbon steel sheet. The selection of SPVV / OPVV for the needs of the steam-gas system in which it is planned to be installed is carried out according to the following simple technical parameters:

  • required system performance in terms of the volume of pumped condensate;
  • characteristics of overheated condensate in terms of operating pressure and temperature;
  • maximum working pressure of secondary steam in the SPVV / OPVV housing.
