A shell-and-tube condenser consists of a bundle of tubes installed between two tube sheets and is designed to condense steam, usually in the shell-and-tube space, during its cooling with a colder coolant supplied to the tube space. In some cases, during the condensation of contaminated steam, which causes contamination of the heat exchange surfaces, the steam can be directed into the pipe space, and the cooling heat carrier into the shell side.

The tubular space lends itself to relatively easier mechanical cleaning than the annular space. High heat transfer coefficient α1, W / (m2 K) during condensation, together with the heat of the phase transition r, W / (m2 the side of the medium moving in the pipes, allows you to achieve high heat transfer efficiency, determined by high values of the heat transfer coefficient k, W / (m2 K) and, as a result, to obtain the optimal heat exchange area in shell-and-tube condensers. High structural strength, as well as the use of special structural elements - temperature compensators, U-shaped pipes, floating heads, compensating for the linear expansion of the metal, makes it possible to use shell-and-tube or tubular heat exchangers in heat exchange processes with a large temperature difference between hot and cold heat carrier.
